Green can be very effective as a background color for portraits. It is important that the shade of green suits the person being portrayed. Green has many shades from blue-green to olive green. Although both shades belong to the green family, they are very different in their psychological effect. Blue green is the color of water and is earnest and more introverted. The olive green tones are the colors of plants and have a reassuring effect upon us. All shades of green are cordial and express helpfulness, patience and compassion. They are therefore excellent as backgrounds for therapists, coaches and people generally in the healing professions.
A primal blue-green is an ideal shade for people with dark hair. The softer shades of blue green are more suitable for those with lighter complexions and lighter hair colorings. Olive shades of green and yellow green are particularly good for people with reddish hair or reddish highlights in their hair. This also applies to those with gold blond hair and often freckles.

A blue-green in a softer shade is also ideal for an ash blond person, whose complexion is light and clear. Blue green is a neighboring color of blue on the color wheel and consequently harmonizes well . Consequently it harmonizes with, and accentuates, the blue eyes of this young woman.

This young man has reddish hair. The soft green is complementary to his own hair coloring. Therefore it accentuates and even intensifies his colorings. A strong blue green as used in the portraits above would overwhelm his subtle colorings and even make him appear very pale.
